ATP Member

Full membership of the Association of Tongue-tie Practitioners (ATP) is open to anyone who is a current tongue-tie practitioner (divider), regulated by a governing body ie. Registered health professional with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), General Medical Council (GMC), General Dental Council (GDC) or other not specifically listed, and registered with the CQC or equivalent if applicable.

Every full member who is working independently from the NHS must be able to demonstrate that they have professional indemnity insurance to perform frenulotomy on babies and infants specifically stated. The ATP will assume that this insurance continues for the duration of ATP membership. It is recommended that parents ask to see evidence of current indeminty insurance before engaging the services of a private practitioner.

What is a Lactation Consultant?

International Board Certified Lactation Consuntant (IBCLC) is a professional with extensive experience and in depth knowledge in supporting breastfeeding mothers. The qualification is via a 4 hours degree level examination as well as at least 2500 hours of providing specialised support to breastfeeding mothers.

It is the highest recognised qualification in breastfeeding. Many people in the NHS and private sectors call themselves breastfeeding specialists but do not have the IBCLC credential. You can check that the person supporting you is on the IBCLCE register at this link https://ibcle.org/public-registry/.

Tongue Tie Practitioner

I trained as a Tongue tie practitioner in 2009 in Southampton under the supervision of Mervin Griffiths MCh FRCS Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatal Surgeon, well renowned specialist in tongue tie. I am a member of The Association of Tongue Tie Practitioners, and hold the relevant insurance.

I am also registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and with Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) equivelant to CQC in England.

Providing Specialist Support

My aim is to provide specialist support and treatment for babies with tongue-tie who are experiencing feeding difficulties. I can see babies up to the age of 12 months and they can be breast or bottle-fed.

Tongue Tie assessment

Within the clinic, the appearance and function of your baby’s tongue will be assessed. If your baby has a tongue-tie, and it is clear that it is causing feeding difficulties or feeding related problems, then your baby’s tongue-tie can be divided, with your consent, within the initial clinic consultation. Specialist feeding support will also be available for you. If the decision is made not to have the procedure, you will be offered support with other strategies to help resolve your feeding difficulties. You can arrange for a tongue-tie division at a later date if you would prefer to work on feeding techniques first. Following a clinic appointment, free online support will be available for the week afterwards.
